it's useless to pick up on muslims because they're just byproducts of their own religion. someone who is religious can be an interesting, sweet person overall but when it comes to a certain point there's no avoiding the fact that all religious people are imbeciles.

Man I am not diggin these generalizations at all. What do you define as an "imbecile?" I can imagine a religious person (aka someone who believes in a God and partakes in organized religion) as having as much reasoning power as you. This person, and you, only differ in what you have managed to convince yourselves; I nearly guarantee that if either was shown evidence that works against your beliefs, you both would disregard it, because once you go through whatever reasoning process you went through and came to opposite conclusions, and then reinforced those beliefs by chilling or talking to people who share your beliefs, your mind doesn't want to be proven wrong after putting in effort (The same shit has happened to me lol). It also depends on so many other factors, such as what environment they were brought up in, what their thought process is like, how much thought they have actually given it, how much it actually matters to them, etc. The generalization that all of them are, at "a certain point," (which is kinda vague) "imbeciles," is a huge stretch, imo.

As for your first point, "if religions finally disappeared the world could be a significantly better place tbh," I'd say that's a really simple way of thinking. First of all, how would the world become better? Would wars cease? Would famine be taken care of? Would greed, jealousy, cowardice, ignorance, etc just suddenly disappear? Would crime significantly decrease? I'd think it wouldn't. What is important about people that have convinced themselves of retarded, ignorant, and sometimes violent religious beliefs isn't the beliefs, but the fact that people have bought into them. Actually, even the beliefs themselves, if you are an atheist, must have originated from human beings. So don't you see that it isn't religion that's causing so many problems; the root of it all are the natural faults humans have that cause them to become so retarded. So come on dude... just think about it lol

you have to keep in mind religion works as a sort of amplifying funnel for these inherent faults: the allure of an all powerful God and his salvation, retribution in the afterlife, freedom from suffering that this world has provided - these are very powerful mechanisms that amplify peoples' innate fears and faults to an enormous degree. none of the problems would go away if religion ceased to exist - but they might dwindle in degree a bit, at least.

i'm also going to say that, while a religious person isn't necessarily an imbecile, there is no viable ground for believing in a God. for hoping in one - perhaps. for believing - which is very different - absolutely not. i would assert that a believer needs to critically evaluate the basis of his beliefs without bias - if truly does that and still believes in God, i'm not sure his reasoning faculties are in order. i think that the vast majority of my intelligent friends that "believe" in God, for instance, simply take it for granted because it's been a part of their upbringing. does that they mean that they really believe in God with ardor and sincerity? absolutely not. I think the majority haven't even given it a serious thought.

still, i'm not going to personally fault someone for believing in God if i like them. because, you know, liking someone is more important than a petty judgment about their beliefs, and even if you think it's a stupid belief, we all have stupid beliefs.

Also, Mark: do you even realize why Muslim extremists are the "worst" out of any religion? because contemporary circumstances surrounding the Middle East have drove them to desperation. There is nothing inherently more violent or pernicious about Islam than Christianity - in fact I'd argue 400 years ago during the time of the inquisition Christianity far outdid Islam in terms of sheer horrific slaughter and violence.

oh yeah for sure, i agree with what you're saying. i guess i got carried away by the extremity of necros's assumptions, lol. but as for a belief in God, do you mean a specific god (i assume yes because of the capital G) or just a supreme being in general?

maclaren: to back up my previous post i only have to say one thing. religious dogma creates a hole in your logic. religion is not the only dogmatic ideology that does this, but it's the strongest because it feeds on your most basic needs, fears, and pleasures. from that hole in your flawed logic, all sort of crap can get legitimated. that's why, to a certain degree, a religious person is automatically an imbecile.

A good deal of religions help out with local communities, soup kitchens etc. which I actually volunteer for myself.
